If content is king, design should be the queen. It’s a deadly crucial element to a website’s success, as it decides how content is to be structured and displayed, and bad design simply ruins the user experience, thus dooming the site traffic.

Often we web designer has to play trading game while we’re designing a website. We either trade beauty for functionality, or functionality for readability, as it’s impossible to produce a design that pleases everyone in every aspect.

So which design is better then? Web designers love to ask this question, and some even challenged themselves to play the trading game better by redesign famous sites such as Facebook and YouTube, thus forming potential designs in this showcase post. Better or worse, you as an user decides it, enjoy!

According to its official statistic, Facebook has served more than 500 million active users, with 700 billion minutes spent on it. For this kind of statistic it will be really stressful to design a web page for it. It might also be the same reason why so many designers challenged themselves to redesign the Facebook. Let us take a view of several great attempts from designers below:

“The Facebook Facelift is a self initiated project to challenge the form and functionality of Facebook. It’s streamlined, structured and linear interface is more comprehensible, enhancing the user experience and absorb-ability of content.”

This innovative design was born from December 2006 and later adapted to contemporary design standards, in order to have a fair comparison with Facebook’s current design. The idea was to create a mail-like application with interface that contains elastic 3 columns layout that clearly separates filter, information-stream, and reaction, which are clearly explained in their post.

“One of my primary goals was to move the interface toward more of a web app-type presentation. Facebook has around 175 million people log in daily; all the repetitive tasks inherent in such usage are conducive to this form of approach. When I was wrapping this redesign up, Twitter’s new app-like UI launched, and gave me a moment of Stuart Smalley-like validation.”

A very sleek design by Peter Knoll. The graphic is greatly improved to make the entire site looks appealing and promising. The interface is also much more cleaner with nice typography applied for good readability.

Facebook variation done by AndasoloARTS, it even gets sold! The color scheme is pretty similar to Peter Knoll’s design, but overall it’s a different design. Again a very sleek design with minimalism in mind.

Once the behemoth of social networking, Myspace was ultimately overtaken by its main competitor, Facebook. Rebranded as My_____ now, it aims to become the leading social entertainment destination which includes music, movies, celebs, TV and games, powered by the passion of fans. Designs below were attempted for the old Myspace, but it’s still great to have a look on what designer thinks Myspace should be.

“What if Myspace had a more clear, defined and beautiful interface by default, but still with the option to personalize it, but in a more comprehensible way? That’s the question I made myself when starting this, and it came out to be a cool project. Besides the visual design, I proposed some usability improvements, based on content that is already on the site, and looking at their sitemap.”

Processing over 1 billion search requests throughout the world, Google is the most famous website in the planet Earth. It’s also known as the kingdom that tries to dominate the internet by building user friendly products like Android, Gmail and Analytics. Since Google has lots of top-notch designers working on their website design, any redesign attempt is a direct challenge to their designers. Interesting.

“Since Google have decided to perhaps re-design things a little I thought I’d have a go at how I want to see and use Google. I didn’t go wild on the icons or the logo mainly because icon designers could do a better job and I like the logo simple like that. Any and all feedback appreciated.”

Ranked no.3 in global and no.4 in US site traffic, YouTube is a website to discover, watch, upload and share videos. Most content have been uploaded by individuals, but famous media like CBS, BBC, Vevo and Hulu have provided their own videos as part of the YouTube partnership program. Do you dare to redesign a site that’s being viewed more than 2 billion times a day? They did it.

A sleek redesign which emphasizes more about video viewing and sharing. Unique approach is applied to this design, though the user interface is a bit similar to Vimeo. Great attempt anyway.

“One of my biggest gripes with YouTube over the years has been the inability to search for other videos whilst watching video, as well as reading comments without having the video scrolling off the top of the screen. The design below attempts to solve this issue by having 3 separately scrollable columns including search, video & comments.”

Amazon went online in 1995 and now it became the multinational e-commerce company which contains the biggest selection of books, magazines, music, DVDs, electronic, computer, software, shoes, virtually everything! Because they’re having such a huge business, designers worldwide have been challenging themselves on improving the design to make it even more beautiful and of course, user friendly.

“I wanted to explore three unique concepts for the redesign of Amazon’s homepage above the fold. Amazon is one of the leading on line shopping sites, but their fluid homepage design is set for monitor sizes with small dimensions, leaving the site to look very gappy on much newer computers with higher resolutions. So I wanted to present three ideas to bring Amazon up to speed.”

There’s no redesign attempt if there’s no issue in the current design, Maurice Kindermann’s Amazon design is the best example for this case. Disappointed with Amazon’s current design, Maurice redesigned the page to solve three particular issues: over-extended screen resolution, fragmented buying option and flooded amount of content.

Claimed itself as the biggest, best, most award-winning movie site on the planet, IMDb (Internet Movie Database) is an online database of information related to movies, television shows, actors, production crew personnel, video games and fictional characters featured in visual entertainment media. Redesigning this site in a way that it shows information effectively will be a great challenge for web designers.

“Why don’t have the current IMDB design? It is overloaded. Large amount of unstructured information. While most users of such sites pay attention mainly to the pictures, videos and more.

So I did a clean and sleek design. Here, the user receives a screen on which there is information about the film: photos, actors, trailers, storyline and more. He does not have to twist, twirl, to read. All that is needed – is to look at the screen.”

With Foursquare, users are able to share their current location by “checking in” via a smartphone application or SMS, bookmarking information about venues and leaving relevant suggestion about nearby venues. Local merchants also utilize the Foursquare to engage and retain their customers. Redesigning for Foursquare is really challenging as it’s a completely unique service so more studies are needed.

Clay Parker Jones believes that a map is a real nifty addition to Foursquare’s user page as the service is all about location. Clicking on the map would collapse the informative stats with 4 different views available. Other add-ons to this page are feeds, likes, tips and suggestions, pretty much like a usual social network page!

It doesn’t matter with the design, every user takes time to adapt the new design. The question is, as an user, do you wish to change to any of the design above, or you’re good with the current design? Do you think these design solve your user experience issue? I believe these design are made to receive your opinion, so feel free to share what you think about them, every opinion counts!

Cómo crear un formulario de contacto de HTML5/CSS3 basadas en Ajax

Translate Request has too much data
Parameter name: request

Contact form is deadly essential for any website, as it acts as a messenger which passes the opinion or enquiries of visitors to webmaster. There have been countless contact forms on the web but unfortunately most of them do not explain to you the inner working parts, so here comes a detailed tutorial to teach you to build an advanced contact form from scratch based on the pop technology, HTML5 and CSS3.

html5 contact form article How to Create An Ajax Based HTML5/CSS3 Contact Form

Considering the nature of a web-based e-mail contact form we are also required to dive into two separate application fields, which is the PHP backend code for sending email and jQuery functions for rich user interface. By the end we will be left with a fully dynamic and functional contact form written with later customization in mind.

Get started now to build your own advanced contact form!

Shortcut to:

Demo – Get a preview of what you are buildingDownload – Download all files (php + css)

To get started you’ll need some type of web server to work over. If you’re running a Windows machine WAMP is probably your best option. Mac users have a similar program named MAMP which is just as easy to install.

wampserver How to Create An Ajax Based HTML5/CSS3 Contact Form

These packages will set up a local server on your machine with full access to PHP. Alternatively if you own server space or have full server access into a remote location you may use that instead. We are not going to need any MySQL databases, which should simplify things a bit.

Once your server is set up create a new folder to house the application. You can name this whatever you’d like as it isn’t detrimental or even related to the final product. The folder structure will be used when you access your files in a web browser. A simple example would be http://localhost/ajaxcontact/contact.php

We will only be working within 2 core files. We’ll first need a core .php file to house not only our application logic, but also frontend HTML markup. Below is sample code taken from our starting file.

HTML5/CSS Ajax Contact Form with jQuery

To begin we have written a simple heading section to our document. This includes a general Doctype declaration for HTML5 and some HTML/XML document elements. These aren’t exactly required, but will ease the rendering process in older (and newer) browsers. Also it never hurts to offer more information.

A bit further down we can see 2 lines right before our closing heading tag. The first includes our jQuery script from the online Google Code Repository. This is required for our dynamic page errors to work. Directly below this we have the inclusion of a basic CSS document containing all of our page styles.

Inside our document body we have a few containing divisions withholding a main contact form. This houses 3 input elements for the user’s name, e-mail address, and personal message. The HTML markup is fairly standard and shouldn’t boggle the mind of any intermediate developer.

Your email was sent. Huzzah!

Here we have a basic PHP conditional code nested within a few page containers. This checks for the set value of a variable named $emailSent and if equal to true, it will display a success message.

The else statement is what will run on first page load since there won’t be any content to send initially. Inside here we will include a brief collection of form elements and a submit button.

Error submitting the form

You may have noticed there is another conditional block directly after the starting form. This checks for a variable named $hasError and will display an error message upon confirmation. This fallback method is only used if JavaScript is disabled in the browser and thus can’t generate dynamic errors.

All the way down we can find individual PHP variables being checked. The statements are regulating if the form has already been submitted with only partial amounts of data filled in. This is another fallback system which displays the contents of fields already filled out – a nice trick for proper user experience!

Directly after our form completion is the few jQuery functions we’ve written. We will talk over these first since they are the default implementation on pageload. However if the browser doesn’t accept JavaScript then by default we can rely on our PHP code.

The easiest way to get started talking on this topic would be to dive right in. I’ll break down individual blocks line-by-line so you can see what the script is actually checking for.

However if you get lost just review the project code files. All of the full blocks are pre-written and well documented in the jQuery website. To get started we open our code similar to any other:

If you are familiar with callbacks you may notice the post() function has a built-in set of parameters. Callbacks are smaller functions which are called upon the response of data from another function.

So for example, when our jQuery.post() function successfully shoots an e-mail it will call its own internal function to display the sliding animation. All of this code could be written in its own block and moved elsewhere. However for the sake of this tutorial it’s much easier writing the callback as an inline function.

The final hurdle to mention is the logic behind our PHP processor. This is the backend system which will actually call a mail function and send out the message. All of the code used in the examples below can be found directly at the top of our main .php file, before any HTML output.

There are also a few internal styles which freshen up the page. There isn’t anything specifically new here so we won’t be going into any of the details. However the styles.css document is included within the project code and contains rudimentary CSS3 techniques.

To start we open our PHP clause and check if the form was even submitted. The POST variable “submitted” was actually a hidden input field added at the very end of our form. It’s a useful way to check if the user has submitted anything yet so we don’t waste server resources.

After this we have 3 separate if/else statement checking to see if each input field has been filled out. I won’t include each bit of logic here since they are all very repetitive in nature. However, to give you a brief example I’ve included the e-mail verification clause below:

// need valid emailif(trim($_POST['email']) === '') {$emailError = 'Forgot to enter in your e-mail address.';$hasError = true;} else if (!preg_match("/^[[:alnum:]][a-z0-9_.-]*@[a-z0-9.-]+\.[a-z]{2,4}$/i", trim($_POST['email']))) {$emailError = 'You entered an invalid email address.';$hasError = true;} else {$email = trim($_POST['email']);}

PHP will trim all whitespace from the value and check to see if anything is left over. If so we have a detailed Regular Expression (Regex) to see if our user’s input string matches up with an e-mail pattern.

You certainly don’t need to understand how preg_match() works to build this script. It is a useful function to determine rules and requirements for a successful type of data, but commands advanced programming knowledge to really grasp. In this scenario we are ensuring the user only inputs a select few characters, includes an @ symbol followed by 2-4 characters representing a Top-Level Domain.

After all of our logic passes and we return no errors it’s time to send our message! This bit of code will set individual variables to customize our e-mail message and setup some mail headers for the process.

// upon no failure errors let's email now!if(!isset($hasError)) {$emailTo = 'youremailhere@googlemail.com';$subject = 'Submitted message from '.$name;$sendCopy = trim($_POST['sendCopy']);$body = "Name: $name \n\nEmail: $email \n\nComments: $comments";$headers = 'From: ' .' <'.$emailTo.'>' . "\r\n" . 'Reply-To: ' . $email;mail($emailTo, $subject, $body, $headers); // set our boolean completion value to TRUE$emailSent = true;}

If you were wondering how the code was going to figure out your e-mail address, this is the part to fill in. The first variable in our set is titled $emailTo and should contain whichever e-mail address, which is going to receive the message.

Inside our $body variable we take advantage of the \n delimiter to add new lines into the message. This adds small placements for the sender’s name, e-mail address, followed by a break for their message content. Of course you could spend time prettying up the display, but this structure works just fine.

This closes our tutorial for an advanced contact form. If you’d like to style your elements in relation to mine you can check out my example styles.css within the project code. However, the page is structured well enough that you could design your own look & feel very easily.

Feel free to download the source code and examine what I’ve done a bit closer. It’s good to follow a tutorial but having direct access to the project source can be invaluable. I’ve also included a brief stylesheet to make customizations a breeze, thanks for your view!

6 Esenciales (pero aburrido) tareas autónomos odian hacer

Translate Request has too much data
Parameter name: request

The thing with freelancing is that it’s a business. You may be a graphic designer, writer, or web developer by profession but since you’re doing business, there are always some boring but essential tasks, you know, like organizing overwhelming to-do lists or filing disgusting taxes. Nonetheless, these tasks are so important that you must do them well in order to succeed in your business.

essential business tasks 6 Essential (But Boring) Tasks Freelancers Hate Doing

This article exists as a guide to offer helpful tips to not only tackle those boring tasks, but also make them feel very interesting to you. You’ve earned absolute freedom (and perhaps longer life) by entering the realm of freelancing, so let these tips save you further from boring and suffering tasks, let’s do it!

To-do lists are instrumental in making our work days productive. They tell us what we need to accomplish in a day, help us divide our tasks into manageable chunks and makes us feel productive as we cross items off it. That is of course the best-case scenario. What really happens with to-do lists is that they just keep on growing. When was the last time you managed to tick off every single item on your to-do list?

to do lists 6 Essential (But Boring) Tasks Freelancers Hate Doing

Ever growing to-do lists overwhelm us and make us feel incompetent and unproductive. The more items added to the list, the more panic we are. Instead of steadily working through the tasks on the list, we end up procrastinating.

To have lists work for you, try limiting the number of things you put on them. At the end or start of the day, list down the five most important things you need to do and don’t add any more items no matter how tempted you are.

All it will take to feel productive is to cross off one item. Suddenly you have 4 tasks to do instead of 5. Get one more done and you’re down to 3. Before you know it, all the items on your list have been crossed off and you’re done for the day! How’s that for making you feel productive?

As freelancers, we live (and die) by deadlines. We know that a missed deadline has the power to make or break a client relationship. So yes, deadlines keep us in business but that’s what makes us hate them too. One missed deadlines and you might end up spending months to repair your relationship with a client.

deadlines 6 Essential (But Boring) Tasks Freelancers Hate Doing

Granted, a missed deadline isn’t the end of the world if you handle it right and if you miss it for a valid reason. But make it a habit or do it more than once and you’ll be struggling to retain clients.

A simple trick to avoid missing deadlines is to always give yourself a couple of extra days. Let’s say you can submit a project by Tuesday, but instead of committing to Tuesday, you tell your client you’ll submit the work on Thursday. This little trick takes care of all your procrastination problems and any freelancing calamity (computer crash, cold & flu etc) that might befalls you.

Doing your own taxes is the most hatred and dreaded task for freelancers. The entire idea of saving your receipts, bills, payments from clients, expenses etc is enough to give one a headache. Then there’s the filing of 1099's and all the other paper work.

taxes 6 Essential (But Boring) Tasks Freelancers Hate Doing

Even if you’re the king or queen of organization, taxes have a way of making you doubt your system. You end up putting it off till the very last minute and then have to rush to get your papers in order.

Here’s what you can do to help doing your taxes easier: hire someone to do it for you. If you don’t want to do that, your best bet is using a tax program made for business that will walk you through each step and even calculate your taxes for you.

The silver lining to doing your taxes is the tax write-offs. Did you know that you can get a write-off for buying stock photos?

In freelancing, being passionate about your work or being good at what you do isn’t enough. What’s good about your talent if you don’t have clients? And you can’t get clients unless you market your business. Freelancers have to be their own cheerleading squad if they hope to find work.

marketing 6 Essential (But Boring) Tasks Freelancers Hate Doing

The good news is that marketing doesn’t have to be sleazy. In today’s age of social media all you have to do is be present and help people. Sign up for Twitter and Facebook. Befriend people in your niche or the clients you’d like to work with and then interact with them. You won’t have to tell them you’re a freelancer, your social media profile will do it.

Strategically talk about your work on these channels and help out as many people as you can and provide value. Showcase your work through them and just interact. Word will soon get out about what you do and how awesome you are.

Don’t believe me? For the past year, I’ve found more works through Twitter than my website. How’s that for non-sleazy marketing?

Whether it’s following up with prospects or clients, the activity is time consuming and undesirable. You’d rather just be given more work to do. After all, that’s what you do best. But if you want more business deals then follow-up is a must. If you’ve just finished a project for a client, sending a follow-up email might land you more work, a testimonial or even a referral. With prospects it might land you a new client.

follow ups 6 Essential (But Boring) Tasks Freelancers Hate Doing

The evil bit about follow-up is that if you don’t do it at the right time, you’ve lost your chance. Follow up too soon and it looks like you’re rushing the client/prospect and they don’t like that. Wait too long and they might forget about you or worse, end up hiring someone else.

To take the hassle out of follow-up, come up with a simple system. Decide on what you feel is the appropriate time after which you need to follow-up then mark it up in your calendar. Next, draft a couple of follow-up emails to use as templates – one for your current clients and one for prospective clients.

Now every time you meet up with a prospect or finish a project with a client, mark the follow-up date on your calendar and on that day use your follow-up email template to send a follow-up email. The evil quotient of following up just went down.

There’s a reason it’s called cold calling – they give freelancers a chill. If you’ve ever made a cold call, you know what I’m talking about. The idea of calling someone you don’t know – worse, who doesn’t know you is enough to make the best of us break out in a sweat. You end up feeling like a sleazy sales person.

cold calls 6 Essential (But Boring) Tasks Freelancers Hate Doing

Well, the trick with cold calls is to not think of it as a cold call. Think of it as an introduction. Suppose you call up a company, introduce yourself and ask something as simple as ‘Do you work with freelancers? If so, I’d love to send you my details’. That doesn’t sound bad right? You’re introducing yourself and then making a non-pushy pitch.

What’s even better than thinking of cold calls as introductory calls is – to not make them at all. Seriously. Make email your best friend. Send cold call emails to any company you’d like to work with. Research them and find the correct person to send an LOI (Letter of Introduction) with all the relevant information.

Doesn’t sound so evil now, right? There’s always a way to make things easier.

The bottom line, however, is you have to put in efforts to try your best. It’s always good to remind ourselves that we enter freelancing because we are confidence with our strength and discipline. So keep this in mind, change your mindset to more positive one, put in some efforts and practice tips given above, then you are on the road of successful freelancing.

What other freelancing tasks do you find evil but necessary to do? What is the task you would never do again if given half the chance? Let us know your freelance nightmare so we can discuss the ways to tackle it!
